Understanding Your Strength Ratios
Skeletal muscle symmetry is a key component of long-term joint integrity and force transfer. While it is natural to have variations in performance based on your limb lengths (for example, long arms favor deadlifts but make bench pressing harder), extreme deviations from standard ratios often point to training imbalances.
The Standard Proportional Targets
Our calculator compares your 1RM lifts against established benchmarks in exercise science:
- Bench Press vs Squat (75%): Your horizontal pressing power is typically three-quarters of your back squat strength. Significant deviation suggests leg or chest dominance.
- Overhead Press vs Bench (60%): Your vertical shoulder pressing strength should hover around 60% of your horizontal bench press capacity.
- Deadlift vs Squat (120%): A deadlift is usually 20% heavier than a back squat, reflecting the larger posterior chain recruitment.
- Barbell Row vs Bench (100%): Your pulling capacity should be equal to your pushing capacity to stabilize your shoulder joints.
How to Fix Muscle Imbalances
If the calculator indicates that a lift is "Underdeveloped," it is recommended to adjust your training block:
- Adjust Volume: Increase the number of weekly working sets for the lagging movement category.
- Move First: Perform your lagging exercises at the beginning of your training session when your central nervous system is fresh.
- Improve Form: Ensure you are using a full range of motion. Cutting depth on squats or bouncing bench presses creates false numbers.
