In powerlifting, absolute strength is not the only metric of success. If a 120 kg (264 lb) lifter and a 60 kg (132 lb) lifter both squat 200 kg (440 lb), their feats are not equal. The lighter lifter has squatted 3.3 times their bodyweight, while the heavier lifter has squatted 1.6 times theirs. Conversely, comparing them purely on bodyweight ratio is also flawed; due to biological scaling laws (the square-cube law), smaller organisms are naturally stronger relative to their mass.
To solve this problem, sports scientists and powerlifting federations use coefficient systems. These are mathematical formulas designed to normalize performance across different bodyweight classes and genders. By applying a coefficient to a lifter's total (the sum of their maximum squat, bench press, and deadlift), they calculate a standardized score. This score enables organizers to select a single "Best Lifter" champion from an entire meet, regardless of weight class.
1. The Wilks Score: The Historical Benchmark
The Wilks Score (or Wilks Coefficient) is the most famous system in powerlifting history. Developed by Robert Wilks in 1995 for the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF), it uses a fifth-order polynomial equation to estimate a lifter's capacity relative to their scale weight.
